ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Town of San Anselmo Recreation Department is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike through a diverse array of recreational programs, activities, and community facilities. From youth sports, classes and workshops to adult classes and engaging town events, the department builds community through enriching experiences.
Led by the Director of Community Services, the department consists of a Senior Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Supervisor, three Recreation Coordinators, Preschool Director, Lead Preschool Teacher, and an administrative assistant who collaborate to oversee San Anselmo’s eight parks, two community centers, and a wide-ranging catalog of youth and adult activities.
ABOUT THE POSITION The Town of San Anselmo’s Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and creative Events specialist to join our team. This position plays a key role in producing and overseeing special events for the community, as well as managing social media and marketing efforts for the Recreation Department. The ideal candidate will have a passion for community engagement, and experience in event management and digital marketing, with a strong ability to multitask and work well under pressure. This is a full-time position, with occasional evening and weekend work required to support events and attend public meetings.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The monthly salary for this 37.5 hour per week position ranges from $6,504 to $7,908, with starting salary depending on experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE: EVENT PLANNING & COORDINATION - Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of various special events for the Recreation Department, including annual Spring Egg Hunts, Community Parade, Goblin’s Spooktacular, Breakfast with Santa, Tree Lighting, Movies in the Park, Beatles in the Park, Volunteer Work Days, Teen Battle of the Bands and the Live on The Avenue summer concert series - Work with department staff, vendors, sponsors, and community partners to ensure smooth and successful event operations - Oversee event logistics, including venue selection, permits, equipment, staffing, and entertainment - Oversee coordination of community initiated special events through reviewing event applications, writing staff reports, and issuing permits - Plan, organize, and execute community event fundraising, engaging local residents, businesses, and organizations. This includes managing event logistics, promoting events, and cultivating donor relationships to ensure success and long-term community involvement - Supervise event set-up, execution, and breakdown, ensuring all activities are carried out safely
SOCIAL MEDIA & MARKETING - Develop and implement a comprehensive social media and marketing strategy to promote Recreation Department programs, events, and activities across various platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) - Create engaging and visually appealing content (e.g., graphics, videos, posts) to increase community engagement and participation - Manage and grow the department’s social media presence, responding to comments and messages in a timely manner - Utilize the organization's recreation platform to send targeted email communications to participants, members, and community stakeholders, ensuring timely updates on programs, events, registration deadlines, and important announcements - Work directly with the Community Engagement Coordinator to curate content for the Town’s weekly newsletter - Manage promotional materials, including flyers, brochures, email newsletters, and digital campaigns to support department events and programs
TEAM LEADERSHIP & SUPERVISION - Supervise and train event staff, volunteers, and temporary workers, ensuring clear communication and efficient event day operations - Work closely with the Chamber of Commerce, businesses, other Town departments, and community members
ADMINISTRATIVE & REPORTING DUTIES - Maintain event-related records, permits, and documents to ensure compliance with town policies and regulations - Assist in evaluating the success of events through participant feedback and post-event analysis, identifying areas for improvement - Prepare regular reports on event activities, social media engagement, and marketing outcomes for department leadership - Develop and manage event budgets, ensuring cost-effective use of resources and adherence to financial constraints - Exercise excellent customer service skills, including the establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and community members - Manage timeline and production for the Recreation Department’s seasonal brochure
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Recreation Supervisor should possess a combination of experience and education equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Event Planning, Marketing, or Communications from an accredited college or university and at least two years of responsible experience in event planning, marketing, or social media management (preferably in a public sector or community-focused environment).
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD DEMONSTRATE: - Proven experience with event production, including logistics, vendor management, and on-site event supervision - Strong proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) and experience in content creation, scheduling, and analytical tools - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage and inform diverse audiences - Strong organization skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously - Ability to work independently and as part of a team, displaying a collaborative and customer-oriented approach - Ability to meet legislative and regulatory requirements relative to working with minors under the age of 18
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The candidate must have the ability to lift and move event material, equipment, and supplies regularly up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 45 pounds, and be available for evening and weekend work as required by event and meeting schedules. San Anselmo (population 13,000) is located in the heart of the Ross Valley in Marin County, approximately 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. San Anselmo has a close-knit and active
community environment. The Town is famous for its many antique collectives, shops and restaurants. San Anselmo’s location in Marin County offers a wonderful mix of active recreational pursuits, including power and sail boating in the ocean and bays, and sheltered harbors with easy access to over 1,000 miles of inland waterways.
The Recreation Department has an annual budget of $1.67 million and provides a comprehensive recreation program to the greater Ross Valley. Its staff manages a variety of programs and facilities and works closely with outside agencies including the local school districts.
