THE JOB The Executive Director will be a seasoned leader who can effectively oversee the activities of SBCOG, including a small but dynamic team of six which includes transportation planners, an accountant, and administrative support staff. The Executive Director will also oversee an operating budget of approximately $3.9 million, transit budget of $2.9 million, sales tax measure of $11.4 million, and possibly other programs and fees. The Executive Director will lead complex projects and work regularly with Caltrans and other regional partners, elected officials, and state and federal agencies. One important role will be establishing effective communication avenues to keep others informed of real-time events, upcoming transportation projects, and construction traffic issues that may affect constituents. The position is responsible for fund development strategies to finance transportation projects and oversee staff and agencies who are overseeing planning, development, and implementation of SBCOG’s transportation projects. They will also develop policy, ensure local, state, and federal regulatory and compliance needs are met, and oversee employee and Board relations, budget, and fiscal management of the JPA. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The next Executive Director will work toward accomplishing the SBCOG’s goals, building relationships, effectively leading, overseeing, and developing staff, demonstrating excellent communication and presentation skills, being responsive and available to all, and exhibiting politically savvy and emotional intelligence while bringing forth creative ideas to addressing and solving issues. They will inspire confidence, demonstrate excellent organizational and project management skills, be committed to collaboration and communication with the public, and work through challenges and obstacles to get the job done.
Bachelor's degree in Urban or Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field; or substitution: additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
Five years of broad and progressively responsible transportation planning or engineering experience, including two years in a supervisory, managerial, or advanced-level professional position, preferably with a city or county planning, public works or transportation department, or a local or regional transportation planning agency, or substitution: a master's degree in one of the fields above may be substituted for one year of the required non-specialized experience.
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and successfully pass a background and reference check for final candidate selection process.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Annual Salary $128,266 - $169,828DOE/DOQ and a generous benefits package
