The City of Bakersfield is searching for its next General Manager of the Water Resources Department and welcomes your application for Water Resources Director.
With a population of over 403,000, Bakersfield is a rapidly growing city within California’s bountiful southern Central Valley. As the seat of Kern County, Bakersfield offers prospective candidates a family-oriented, affordable, and diverse community to join.
As the General Manager of the Water Resources Department, the Water Resources Director will direct the operations of the City-owned portions of the Kern River and oversee the management of the Agricultural and the Domestic Water Divisions for the City. This position is integral in managing the operation, maintenance, and water distribution within the Kern River, including weirs and headgates and diversions into canals for City. This position has one direct report but provides indirect oversight for over thirty (30) employees and is tasked with coordinating, empowering, and leading the staff to focus on meeting the City’s goals and community priorities through excellent service, supporting team members, stewardship, and integrity. As water is life to the City, it is critical for this position to protect the use of the City’s pre-1914 water rights, effectively coordinate with other local water agencies, and prepare all flow records on the Kern River, including the Annual Hydrographic Report and leading in expanding City domestic water system as new development requires expanded water services.
