BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position is located within the Fitness Division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, California. The purpose of this position is to serve as the Fitness/Aquatic Specialist (Facility). This includes managing the aquatics department onboard NAWS China Lake. Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance, upkeep and appearance for all Sports/Fitness/Aquatics Facilities under the direct supervision of the Fitness Director. Incumbent responsible for inspection, reporting general maintenance, janitorial, and leading a small team of employees to ensure compliance with Navy and CNIC program standards to ultimately support quality of life programs for service members, families and other eligible customers.
40% Oversees the facilities maintenance and janitorial of Fitness Centers, Gymnasiums, Outdoor Sports Field, and two swimming pools.
20% Ensures that Fitness Center operations comply with OSHA, BUMED, OPNAV, OPM and other related operating and safety policies, programs and instructions.
30% Directly supervises up to 20 aquatics staff made up of NF-1 and NF-2 Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors, to include scheduling, assigning work, providing skill assessments and training to maintain effectiveness, setting priorities, evaluating performance, and ensuring safety and other required rules are followed at all times.
10% Clearly communicates with all Sports/Fitness/Aquatic personnel to ensure services, standards and expectations are being met. Provides stellar customer relations by answering questions regarding programs offered through Sports/Fitness/Aquatics Division and MWR in general. Supports special events and programs as necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Must have minimum of 3 years’ experience as Aquatics Manager.
Must be Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certified.
Must be Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT) Certified.
Must have knowledge gained through relevant work experience which enables the incumbent to competently and independently carry out day to day operations as described above.
Must possess skill in the effective management of the fitness and physical resources of programs.
Must be knowledgeable of physical fitness, have sound leadership, have effective written and verbal communication skills and interview skills. Considerable tact and diplomacy as well as fitness are required when interacting with staff members and customers.
Must have experience in managing aquatics facilities, or have one or more professional certifications in the aquatics field such as American Red Cross/YMCA/USA Swimming Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, or Certified Pool Operator.
Within 90 days of appointment must possess and maintain a current CPR and AED Certification along with Navy Basic Fitness Certification.
Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry
