The City of Vacaville Parks and Recreation Department is currently recruiting for three (3) Recreation Coordinators. The vacancies exist in the following program areas: Full-Time Recreation Coordinator for Aquatics and Special Interest; Full-Time Recreation Coordinator for Special Events and Cultural Arts; and Part-Time Recreation Coordinator for Therapeutic Recreation. This recruitment may be used to establish a list for future vacancies that occur over the next twelve (12) month period.
Under general supervision the Recreation Coordinator plans, organizes, promotes, facilitates and coordinates various recreational, social and cultural activities.
The Ideal Candidate will have experience in collaborating, managing contracts, budgeting, planning and organizing recreational programs, events, and educational activities, as well as the ability to enhance programs and services while maximizing cost recovery.
Duties of the Recreation Coordinator may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Plans, organizes, promotes, facilitates and coordinates regularly scheduled activities, programs, citywide special events, fundraisers and services;
Researches current and anticipates future recreation trends;
Recruits, trains, provides technical/functional supervision, and evaluates subordinate staff and volunteers; exercises oversight of facilities and staff; maintains relationships with outside contractors;
Evaluates program effectiveness and provides recommendations for improvement or modification; assists in the development and implementation of program goals and objectives, policies, procedures and work standards; prepares and maintains records and reports on activities;
Prepares, administers and presents budget for area of responsibility;
Pursues program sponsorship;
Actively networks, creates partnerships, and collaborates with internal and external agencies and organizations to develop community recreation programs, activities and events;
Participates in specific committees;
Addresses customer needs and issues, and is responsive to both internal and external customers.
All Recreation Coordinator positions may be required to work irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
Aquatics and Special Interest (Full-Time)
Leads aquatic training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures; ensures that lifeguard staff attend required trainings and maintains records on same.
Ensures aquatic safety and supervision of patrons; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of City aquatic facility to prevent accidents.
Develops classes and events for all ages in the areas of special interest and aquatics.
Works closely with pool maintenance staff to monitor daily chemicals and pool operations and maintains accurate records to adhere to all state, local and City health and safety regulations.
Special Events and Cultural Arts (Full-Time)
Focus on planning special events, fundraising and program sponsorship.
Develops close working relationships and collaborates with community groups and local non-profits such as Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Business Improvement District, and Travel and Tourism organizations.
Organizes, facilitates and books entertainment for Summer Concert Series and other special events.
Develops classes and events for all ages in the area of cultural arts.
Therapeutic Recreation (Part-Time)
Plans, coordinates and implements a variety of, adaptive and inclusive programs, activities and events with consideration of needs, abilities, and interests for individuals with a broad range of disabilities.
Collaborates with community partners and businesses that support adaptive/inclusive opportunities, to grow the overall program.
Maintains a current knowledge of laws and practices related to the provision of Therapeutic Recreation, Inclusion and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:
Education: Equivalent to an Associate's degree with coursework in recreation, physical education, public administration or a related field. A Bachelor's degree in a related field is desirable.
Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator - at least twelve (12) units in Therapeutic Recreation coursework is highly desirable.
Experience: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience planning and organizing recreation, education, social services or closely related activities. Experience working in a lead capacity is highly desirable.
Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator - at least one (1) year community based therapeutic program experience with individuals with a broad range of disabilities is highly desirable.
License/Certificate: These vacancies require a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
Aquatics and Special Interest Coordinator: the following certifications are highly desirable at time of hire and must be obtained by the completion of probation:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT)
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)
Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator: one of the following certifications is highly desirable:
