Novato Fire is seeking an experienced finance professional to play a critical role in our organization.
This opportunity is available due to an approaching retirement of the current incumbent. The Finance Director is hired by and reports to the Fire Chief; is an unrepresented position; and is employed under a negotiated employment agreement. The current incumbent has been employed by the District for 15 years. As illustrated by the receipt of the CAFR and PAFR for multiple years, the District is a stable organization, with a conservative fiscal approach. With the assistance of the Finance Director, District management and Board of Directors strive to maintain the financial health of the District; provide outstanding fire and emergency services to our residents and visitors; and plan and implement strategies for future economic health.
This position oversees a wide range of accounting functions, including planning, organizing, reviewing, and evaluating all functions required to perform accounting, financial record keeping, payroll activities, purchas-ing administration, and ambulance billing. This includes preparing and presenting monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors; preparing documents and reports for annual financial audits; preparation and implementation of GASB or other financial regulations and mandates.
The ideal candidate for this position will have considerable experience in private or governmental finance work that includes responsibilities for, and knowledge of, generally accepted accounting principles regarding accounting and budget functions of a governmental agency. Candidates should also have supervisory experience, and the ability to work with and manage diverse personalities. The ability to interact positively with employees at all levels of the District in an approachable and tactful manner, as well as with elected officials and members of the public is an important role in this position.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major work in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or other related field.
Five years of experience in private or governmental finance work, that include responsibilities for budget formulations and implementation and accounting functions.
Valid California Driver’s License
Use of computer in Windows format (Windows 7/10)
Expertise in Excel and QuickBooks
Organize work effectively
Understand brief written and oral instructions, as well as instructions related to complex projects
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration or other related field.
Knowledge and understanding of ADP payroll systems
