The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department is looking for highly qualified, experienced Golf Services Manager

This is a management level position responsible for planning, directing, and supervising a municipal golf course operation through subordinate supervision, including City-staffed course maintenance personnel and concessionaire agreements with a PGA Head Golf Professional and a food and beverage vendor.
Course Description: Poplar Creek Golf Course is a municipally owned course that was completely rebuilt in 2000 and hosts approximately 68,000 rounds per year. The fairways are Poa annua, Perennial Ryegrass and Paspalum mix; the greens are 80% Poa annua/20% Bentgrass; and tees are 60% Poa annua/40% Perennial Ryegrass; irrigation system is Rainbird Maxi Central. Irrigation water (with the exception of greens) is provided through on site wells, stored in 2 lakes, and managed with a Flowtronics Hybrid Pump Station. Greens are irrigated through a domestic water system. The course employs approximately 9.58 FTE. There are currently two lessee agreements, one with the Head PGA Golf Professional and the second with the food and beverage concessionaire.
What You’ll Do
Manage the operation, maintenance, and concession contracts of Poplar Creek Golf Course, ensuring high quality playing conditions and customer service.
Develop administrative policies and procedures for facility operations and best management practices; develop and monitor operating budget and revenue expectations; manage capital improvement projects.
Assist in negotiating concessionaire contracts; administer contracts and review revenues and expenditures and ensure that contract provisions are being met for pro-shop, restaurant and related activities; ensure alignment of approach and attitude of pro-shop and restaurant concessionaires in order to provide the best customer experience for golfers
Work with the Head Golf Professional to develop marketing strategies, advertisement, and programs and to promote golfer patronage and enhance the golfer experience.
Provide customer service by responding and resolving golfer concerns; answer questions and inquiries in a timely manner
Plan, supervise, through subordinate supervision, and review all maintenance activities for golf course maintenance, including irrigation systems, tees, fairways and greens.
Coordinate and oversee the design and renovation of golf course facilities and grounds.
Perform administrative and miscellaneous duties by providing various methods of correspondence; research problems and implement solutions; keep appropriate records.

Depending on the number of candidates, the first round of interviews may be conducted on December 4, 2017. A limited number of the most highly qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. The process may include an Oral Panel interview and department interview. An eligible list will be established from those who pass the examination process. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least 6 months with the possibility of an extension for an additional 6 months. Once placed on an eligible list, and at the time a vacancy occurs, eligible candidates may be contacted by the hiring department and scheduled for additional department interviews.

What You Bring
You possess at least 4 years of administrative and/or supervisory experience in golf course operations and maintenance.
You have the equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major course work in horticulture, agronomy, or a field related to the work. Additional experience in golf course management, turf maintenance or a related field may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.
Valid California Driver’s License is required
Bonus Points (highly desirable)
Previous experience in turf management and working with high salinity soils and irrigation water, working on a public or daily fee golf course and/or in a Union shop is highly desirable.
Demonstrated success in growing golf rounds and revenue is highly desirable.
